Background

Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nation, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova, is implementing a project aiming to provide Technical Assistance to the first General Agriculture Census (GAC) of Moldova which will also provide a basis of establishing sound system of Agriculture Statistics. The project staff will work under the guidance and supervision of the regular staff on the National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova and remain accountable to the Lead Technical Officer of FAO through the National Project Coordinator.

Scope of work

The GIS specialist will work in close collaboration with officials of National Statistics Office and the project staff. He will be responsible for preparation of maps and charts to be included in the information products coming out of the project activities, and for building capabilities of national staff in handling spatial data. In particular, the specialist will undertake following duties under the project:

  1. Participate as trainer in the capacity building events organized with in the framework of the project;
  2. Train and assist the national staff and the project staff in use of GIS software for presentation of statistical data;
  3. Propose maps and charts to be included in the publications (electronic and in print) prepped from the project
  4. Prepare appropriate maps and chart himself, and revise those prepared by others for inclusion in information prodcuts;
  5. Make contribution to presentations in the meetings and events for dissemination of data gathered through the GAC;
  6. Contribute to designing of information products, including leaflets, pamphlets, posters, reports and thematic studies;
  7. Work with layout designer(s) and printers to prepare draft publications;
  8. Participate in the activities of FAO mission(s), particularly those relating to dissemination of information from GAC and for imparting training in GIS technologies;
  9. Carry-out proof reading of draft publications before printing;
  10. Any other duties assigned with in the framework of the project;
  11. Prepare a monthly report summarizing the work done and issues for clearance by the National Project Director.

Requirements for experience

- University degree in Geography, Computer science, or Information technology

- Experience in handling voluminous data to for spatial depiction.

- Good understanding geography and political boundaries of Republic of Moldova.
- Knowledge of office IT technologies and the software used for GIS;

- Ability to work in English language environment;

- Command over at least one of the official languages of the Government (Romanian and Russian)
