1 The Riddle: new anti-homophobia message from UN human rights office

Chisinau, 17 May 2013 -76 countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people everywhere continue to suffer violent attacks and discriminatory treatment. In this simple, high-impact video from the UN human rights office, individuals from diverse backgrounds pose questions directly to the viewer designed to expose the nature of human rights violations suffered by LGBT people around the world. The video includes cameo appearances by UN Secretary-General and High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay. The UN's message: LGBT rights are human rights. Together we will build a world that is free and equal.


1 Confidence was subject to a survey

Chisinau, 10 May 2013 -It was "weighted", "measured", "defined" and suggested as solution for improving people's life. It is about confidence. A survey determining the level of confidence between the people from the both sides of the River Nistru was undertaken for the first time in Moldova by the "Novii Vek" Center from Tiraspol and "Community Initiative for Democratization and Counseling" from Chisinau, with the financial assistance of the Joint UNDP-EU "Support to Confidence Building Measures" Programme. More details about the respective analysis are pointed out in the interview with Elena Bubcova, President of the Independent Center of Analytical Surveys "Novii Vek".


1 School and kindergarten from Tareuca Village have biomass heating system installed as an alternative to the natural gas heating system

Chisinau, 30 April 2013 -The school and the kindergarten from Tareuca Village, Resina Rayon have their energy security ensured. Both institutions have modern pellet-fired heating plants installed within their facilities. Next winter the village school and kindergarten will be heated based on fuel produced locally, among the beneficiaries being more than 230 children and the staff.

The biomass heating system is an alternative to the existing one based on natural gas. "Since 2005 we have used natural gas to heat the village school and kindergarten. The continuous increase in natural gas prices forced us to cut on other expenses necessary for both institutions. Even a few weeks when we had the new biomass heating system tested showed that the savings we can achieve during the heating season would count for hundreds of thousands of lei", Mihail Olari, Mayor of Tareuca Village, pointed out.


1 First Concert powered by Solar Energy was organised in Chisinau

Chisinau, 29 April 2013 -The First Concert powered by Solar Energy in the Republic of Moldova "Sun Da-i Fest" took place in Chisinau on Sunday, 28 April 2013.

Hundreds of people spent the afternoon in the rhythms of music powered by solar energy. The Bands FurioSnails, Whinona Ryderz, Paralela 47, DJ Dawee (SWS, Berlin), Dandies, Laura Bodorin and the Girls' Fanfare from Holercani charmed the audience with their energising songs.


1 Modern biomass boilers to become more affordable in Moldova

Chisinau, 15 April 2013 -More than 600 families will be able to purchase modern biomass boilers, after the procurement costs will be partially covered by European funds. The Government, with the support of the EU-UNDP Energy and Biomass Project, is launching today a Programme which will offer, under more favourable terms, biomass boilers to households.

Modern biomass-based technologies have become more affordable thanks to the launch of this Programme. Households from villages and small towns will have now the opportunity to buy briquette, pellet fired boilers, or combined boilers, with 30% of the costs to be reimbursed through funds allocated by the Moldova Energy and Biomass Project.


1 Other eight localities from the security zone will renovate their social institutions

Chisinau, 12 April 2013 -Eight localities from the security zone will renovate their social institutions with the assistance provided by the UNDP-EU "Support to Confidence Building Measures" Programme. These localities were selected following the second round of the competition of social infrastructure projects, which was carried out by the UNDP-EU Programme in December 2012 – January 2013.

The Evaluation Committee of the UNDP-EU Programme has selected the following localities: Corjova, Molovata Nouă, Cocieri, Sanatăuca, Răscăieţi, Coşniţa, Copanca, and Varniţa. The projects were selected within a gradual, transparent, and competitive process based on the project proposals submitted for the competition. A total number of 52 localities from the security zone participated in the competition, submitting all in all 68 project proposals. Viorel Albu, Manager of the Community Development Component under the UNDP-EU Programme, mentioned that the winning projects mainly aim at the renovation of kindergartens, schools, social centers, and health centers, reconstruction of community markets, as well as the rehabilitation of water supply networks.


1 UNDP supports the Republic of Moldova in reporting on UN Convention against Corruption

Chisinau, 10 April 2013 -National Anticorruption Centre (NAC)launched a self-assessment of the achievements in the area of anti-corruption after Moldova joined the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2007. The self-assessment consists of an analysis of the compliance of Moldova's national anti-corruption legislation, systems, policies, and institutions with UNCAC requirements. Various stakeholders such as Ministries of Justice, Finance, Internal Affairs, Customs Service, Parliament, as well as representatives of civil society and private sector will be involved in this exercise.

A first meeting which brought together stakeholder groups was organized to discuss the goal and methodology of this exercise. The anticorruption self-assessment will focus on the three UNCAC main areas: prevention –Chapter II, criminalization and law enforcement - Chapter III and international cooperation - Chapter IV.
