Electoral Support to Moldova

 

Description:

The project supports democratic development in Moldova through strengthening of the electoral administration and electoral processes over the 2009-2013 electoral cycle.

 

Objectives pursued:

  • Improved standing and capacity of electoral management bodies and their  staff;
  • An improved voter registration process;
  • Enhanced participation of citizens abroad in electoral processes; and
  • Support on electoral legislation and judicial issues.

 

Benefits expected:

  • Increased accuracy of voter registers will increase the integrity of electoral processes;
  • Refreshed vision for electoral administration in Moldova, building on work done since the passage of Law 101 in 2008;
  • Enhanced participation of citizens will provide for a greater degree of representation in elected bodies; and
  • Greater staff motivation, streamlined procedures and improved infrastructure will enable electoral management bodies to better manage elections.

Public awareness:

In previous years the project has helped to expand and develop the CEC’s own  outreach capacity. In 2011 the project supports the CEC to communicate with donors, civil society and international partners to elaborate and build support for the modernisation of Moldovan electoral administration.

Noteworthy:

The Central Electoral Commission is a key role actor in the Moldovan electoral process. The outcomes of this project are important in promoting an improved representative democracy in the Republic of Moldova. The ultimate beneficiaries of this project are Moldovan citizens who with an improved electoral process, greater transparency of the electoral process and improved capacity for citizens abroad to participate in national and municipal elections as a result they will play an enhanced part in country's democratic development and decision-making processes.
