Safety of the food of animal origin - an EU recommendation for the benefit of Moldovan consumers

CHISINAU November 8, 2011 --UNDP through its project "Building Institutional Capacity of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration” provides support to the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry in aligning Moldovan standards in food safety area to those of the EU.
New regulations specify conditions for handling, preparation, processing, packaging, etc. of food, hygienically, with hygienic machinery in hygienic premises. Transposition of the specific EU legislation into Moldovan legal framework has been done with the support of 8 (eight) international consultants hired by UNDP.

They performed targeted evaluation activities of Moldovan production of milk and dairy products, red meat and game, poultry, fish and honey areas (including assessment of small producers). Each expert developed draft bylaws, regulations, instructions, guidelines and presentations explaining the new standards for conducting activities in the areas mentioned. Details on their deliverables can be found on the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry website http://www.maia.gov.md/category.php?l=ro&idc=163&nod=1&.
Implementation of the Moldovan food safety strategy is one of the preconditions advanced by the EU Commission for the commencement of the negotiations on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area.
