Thousands of kilometres covered to improve the draft of the National Decentralization Strategy

CHISINAU April 22, 2011 -- The first round of public consultations on the draft National Decentralisation Strategy has been finalized. Within the consultative meetings, held during April 4-15 this year, the representatives of central and local government from all over the country have been informed about the reform that aims to strengthen the local autonomy and could express their views in order to improve the final document of the Strategy.

Another round of consultations, with the newly elected local public authorities, will take place during the months of July and August. Meanwhile, a series of debates on this draft with the civil society, academia and scientific society will be organized. The summary of all proposals will be analysed and the recommendations received will be inserted in the final draft of the Strategy.

We remind that the draft Strategy is available on the official webpage of the State Chancellery and the related opinions and suggestions can be submitted to the Division for decentralization policies.

The goal of the decentralization reform is to strengthen the capacities of the local government and improve the management and quality of the public services provided to citizens, in particular to vulnerable groups.

In the process of decentralization and strengthening of local autonomy, the Government of Moldova is sustained by the Joint Integrated Local Development programme, implemented with the assistance of UNDP, UN Women and financially supported by the Swedish Government.
