Villages from Telenesti and Singerei sign the memorandums of understanding to get connected to the biomass-based heating systems

November 16, 2011 -Telenesti: eight villages from Telenesti and Singerei which will connect their public institutions to biomass-based heating systems signed today the Memorandums of Understanding with United Nations Development Programme within the framework of the Energy and Biomass Project funded by the European Union.

10 schools and kindergartens from these 8 villages (Telenesti rayon: Chistelnita, Saratenii Vechi, Verejeni; Singerei rayon: Alexandreni, Bursuceni, Bilicenii Noi, Dumbravita, and Pepeni) will be heated with locally produced energy during the winter time.

“I am very glad that Pepeni village has passed all the selection stages and thanks to the support granted by the European Union and UNDP Moldova, the kindergarten from the village will benefit from a modern heating system based on briquettes. I know the biomass advantages from my own experience, as it is already for 2 years that a have given up the gas-based energy in favor of the briquettes I use to heat my house and make savings”, stated Dorin Pintea, mayor of Pepeni village, Singerei rayon.

By the end of the current week, other 10 villages from Hincesti and Falesti rayons will sign the Memorandum of Collaboration with UNDP Moldova.

Just to remind, in 2011, the Energy and Biomass Project has carried out its activities in the following rayons: Stefan Voda, Leova, Cantemir, Hincesti, Telenesti, Singerei, Falesti, and ATU Gagauz Yeri, all in all 35 rural communities were selected to benefit from connecting their public institutions to modern system for biomass-based energy production. Thanks to the new energy source, over 18.000 persons will increase their heating comfort, as 35 rural communities were selected to connect their public institutions to modern systems. By 2014, the project will cover all the rayons of the Republic of Moldova, in total, at least 130 rural public institutions will be connected to heating system based on agricultural waste.

The energy produced from biomass has a lot of benefits. It reduced dependency on imports, increases energy security, has lower costs, and allows for new business development and job creation. Besides, the energy from renewable sources reduces greenhouse gas emissions and environment pollution.

Moldova Energy and Biomass Project will be implemented over a period of 4 years during 2011-2014. The project total budget is 14.56 million Euro, granted by European Union (14 million Euro) and UNDP Moldova (560,000 Euro).
