Three communities received awards for ensuring local democratic governanceDuring the European Local Democracy Week (10-16 October), the Government of the Republic of Moldova handed out certificates of excellence to three communities in Moldova which contributed to ensuring an efficient local governance for citizens. The certificates were awarded at a National Conference on „The role of local governments in ensuring human rights and gender equality at the local level”, organized by the State Chancellery with the support of the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme in Chisinau. According to Victoria Cujba from the State Chancellery, Decentralization Policy Department, the awarded local public authorities have been assessed by the State Chancellery and its development partners - UNDP, UN Women and the Government of Sweden within the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme – based on criteria which included community participation, strategic management of local government, human rights based approach in local development, mobilization of community, including vulnerable groups, the implementation of local initiatives, and local government’s partnerships with the civil society. Certificates of excellence were given to the mayor’s offices of Mandresti village from Telenesti district, Tarnova village from Edinet district and Porumbesti village from Cantemir district. Anatol Onceanu, Government’s Deputy Secretary General, said during the event that those three communities can serve as a good example for other communities in the country. „There are many more representatives of local communities, heads of districts, municipal, town and village councilors and mayors in the Republic of Moldova, who do their job very well and have remarkable successes”, Anatol Onceanu said during the ceremony. “They did a lot of good things for their communities and have been repeatedly elected as local mayors”.
