Two social institutions from Anenii Noi district were renovated with the assistance of the European Union and UNDP Moldova

July 22, 2011, Chisinau – Today, the kindergarten from Puhaceni village and the school from Roscani, Anenii Noi, resumed their activity after being renovated thanks to the assistance offered by the project “Support to Confidence Building Measures”, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.

The initiative to renovate these buildings belongs to the communities that, in the absence of their own resources, requested the support of the European Union for urgent repairs. Thus, with the assistance of the project “Support to Confidence Building Measures” and in cooperation with the residents and local government of Puhaceni, the rooms and the corridors of the local kindergarten were repaired, and the doors, windows and roof of the institution were replaced. “It is for the first time in its 37  years that our kindergarten benefits from an essential renovation and we enjoy the fact that those over 200 children who attend it will finally have normal conditions for education, rest and playing”, Ion Sarev, the Mayor of Puhaceni, said. The repair works lasted for 10 months and 55 thousand 103 Euro have been allocated for this purpose.

With the financial support of the European Union, in the amount of 16 thousand 647 Euro, the school of Roscani was also repaired, where about 300 students study. Within 6 months the gyms and the toilets were renovated, and the roof of the school was partially repaired. “Today’s event is a gift not only for the students and teachers, but also for all 450 families from Roscani for whom the school remains to be one of the most important institutions in their community”, the Mayor of Roscani, Nicolae Lungu, said.

The Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova, said that European Union pays special attention to the promotion of dialogue and cooperation between the authorities from Moldova and Transnistrian region and the support of the infrastructure development projects in the communities from the Transnistrian region and the security zone is a compelling example to this end. “EU promotes, through concrete measures, the confidence among people on both sides of the Nistru River. Only with this confidence we will be able to raise the living standards and remove the barriers created by the political factor. EU provided support and will continue sustain similar projects in the future, especially in the social, business and environment areas”, Ambassador Schuebel said.

The project “Support to Confidence Building Measures” aims to address the needs of the communities from the Transnistrian region by increasing the access to basic social and economic services and to objective and diversified information sources. At the same time, the project tackles the needs of the most vulnerable communities, a particular emphasis being laid on the Transnistrian region, including the security zone. The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.
