Local Democracy Week is of Today on Letters as Well

October 13, 2011-- The State Chancellery, with the support of the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme, launched new stamps and envelopes for international circulation on the occasion of the European Local Democracy Week (ELDW). The event took place in the framework of a National Conference on „The role of local government in ensuring human rights and gender equality at the local level”.
The stamp features a map of the Republic of Moldova, the colors of the country and of the European Union and the text “European Local Democracy Week”. The drawing in the left upper part of the envelope has the same symbols and the same text on it. The stamp costs 1.20 MDL.
„Postage stamps, besides the basic purpose of serving as means of payment for postage charges, play an important role in spreading the messages about an event. When sent to our colleagues, friends and acquaintances abroad, this envelope and stamp, dedicated to the European Local Democracy Week, conveys our message about this event, but also about the Republic of Moldova”, Vadim Cebanu, Director General of „Poşta Moldovei” (Moldova’s Post Office) said.
The first envelopes dedicated to the ELDW were symbolically stamped during the conference by Anatolie Onceanu, the Deputy Secretary General of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, Ingrid Tersman, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden in the Republic of Moldova, Kaarina Immonen, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova, Ulvi Akhundlu, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau and Tatiana Badan, President of the Congress of Local Authorities from Moldova. New custom envelopes and stamps were distributed to all local government and civil society representatives, who attended the conference.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova, Kaarina Immonen, said at the ceremony that the initiative to launch the postage stamp and envelope will help promote Moldova’s image and the positive measures undertaken by the local public authorities to promote democracy.
