One Day on Earth 11.11.11: The story from the Republic of Moldova focuses on a renewable energy initiative in Sipoteni, Călăraşi
CHISINAU, 11 November 2011-- 120 staff of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) around the world, including the Republic of Moldova, are participating today in the world’s largest media collaboration “One Day on Earth 11.11.11”, by filming in one single day initiatives and projects aimed at building a better life for everyone.
Inspired from the UNDP - One Day on Earth partnership, the project One Day on Earth 11.11.11 has become the largest initiative of integrating media efforts into the UN’s work. UN Agencies such as UNAIDS, UNHCR, WHO, UN Women and World Bank have joined globally UNDP’s initiative to document, in one single day, on Friday November 11, the projects and actions which have a positive impact on people, communities, and countries.
The story from the Republic of Moldova focuses on a project to promote renewable energy, carried out by a non-government organization in the village of Sipoteni, Călăraşi district, for the youth and children from the Social-Professional Integration Centre „Angel”. With UNDP’s support in the framework of a Small Grants Programme, the Association for Renewable Energy Promotion from Sipoteni installed a system for the production of power from biomass and solar energy for the beneficiaries of the Centre. The new system will help reduce by 4 times the costs compared to using natural gas during the heating season and make an annual saving worth 26, 260 Moldovan Lei (US$ 2, 500).
„Through our participation in the One Day on Earth initiative 11.11.11, we are spreading the good results of this project through video images”, said Matilda Dimovska, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Moldova. “The project will serve as a good example in the area of renewable energy use both for communities in Moldova and other countries in the world “.
The on-line community OneDayOnEarth.org, which collects and disseminates the footage filmed around the world on November 11, 2011 had 25,000 participants one day before the event.
