UNDP supports the development of the 2012-2022 National Environment StrategyUNDP projects "Support for Environment Protection" and "Transitional Capacity Support for the Public Administration of Moldova" supported the Ministry of Environment in developing Moldova's National Environmental Strategy for 2012-2022. The broad consultations organized by UNDP in Chisinau and other communities of the country aimed at bringing together local public authorities, non-government organizations and other local actors to discuss the priorities of the Strategy and their role in fulfilling them. "Local public authorities will play a key role in translating the priorities of the Strategy into concrete actions at the local level", said Gheorghe Salaru, Minister of Environment. "We count on their involvement and support". The major objective of the National Environmental Strategy is to promote sustainable development of the Republic of Moldova through green economic growth and environmental protection which will ultimately contribute to reducing poverty in the country. Its priorities include rational use of water resources, waste management, air protection, biodiversity conservation and adaptation to climate change. The Strategy has a particular focus on Moldova's European integration agenda, including the harmonization of the legal and institutional framework in the field of environment to the EU requirements. The development of Moldova's National Environment Strategy is also part of the country's preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 in June 2012, a milestone event aimed at securing renewed political commitment to sustainable development and addressing new and emerging challenges. UNDP is supporting the European integration priorities of the Republic of Moldova, including the implementation of the provisions of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement. __________________________
