SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES WERE AWARDED FOR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

In 2010 was organized the first edition of annual national contest in corporate social responsibility realm for small and medium enterprises

May 28 , 2010, Chisinau - Several small and medium enterprises were awarded at the ceremony held today during International Forum of Small and Medium Enterprises. The event was attended by business representatives from Moldova, the Moldovan government and international organizations.

Being at its first edition, the annual Corporate Social Responsibility contest aims to encourage and promote the integration of social and environmental protection into business activities from the country. The contest was organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Orange S.A , Moldova, Agroindbank and Organisation for Small and Medium Enterprise Development (ODIMM).

"We will continue to promote social responsibility and business growth through new business concepts and practices, as well as strengthening local capacity for better results, higher incomes and a better life for people in Moldova," said Matilda Dimovska, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, at the awarding ceremony.

"Orange Company aims to promote corporate responsibility as through activities with our beneficiaries’ participation, as well as to encourage our business colleagues to imply themselves in environment, society and attitude changes into better within their locality. We will continue with our example, through our actions and resources to promote corporate responsibility for a prosperous and modern society” said Liudmila Climoc, General Director Orange Moldova.

The participants were evaluated by a panel comprising Global Compact Network Moldova members for achievements during 2009 in the following areas:

1. Award for social integration and community support was granted to the company Bevera-Nord SRL., (Soroca town). Bevera-Nord is a light industry small enterprise, which actively participates in community life of the town. In 2009, Bevera-Nord participated in sponsoring socially vulnerable families, arranging playgrounds for children, helped get the bed linen and equipment for canteen for orphaned children in vocational school of Zguruta village. Moreover, Bevera-Nord is implied in fabric of clothes for orphanages and various boarding schools from different regions of the country.

2. Environmental Protection Award was received by Dost S.A (Ceadir-Lunga raion) for use of construction wastes in manufacturing new materials. This example combines commercial interest through providing raw material to produce finished materials, as well as reducing environmental impact through the re-using process developed by the company.

3. Award for workers labour conditions respect went to Berhord SRL(Chisinau), which deals with trade and production of industrial equipment. Berhord SRL. implements special programs for motivating its employees by providing lunches and sports subscriptions. Berhord SRL collaborates with the Technical University of Moldova in recruiting young professionals.

4. The Grand Prix was offered to the enterprise Plaiul Bîrlădean SRL. The enterprise operates in the village Bîrlădeni, Ocnita district. It placed in service a dormitory for 70 employees from different districts of the country working for the company. Moreover, employees are provided with three meals a day. Plaiul Bîrlădean SRL also has rebuilt the ambulatory of the Birladeni village which provides preventive care services for villagers and employees. As an agricultural enterprise, Plaiul Bîrlădean takes stringent measures to ensure environmental protection in production processes.

About Global Compact: The Global Compact is the largest global corporate social responsibility initiative, launched in 2000 by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. It currently includes about 6,000 participants from over 133 countries. The Local Global Compact Network was launched in Moldova in November 2006 and currently includes 57 members. 

About Corporate Social Responsibility: Corporate Social Responsibility is a concept that encourages companies to take into consideration interests of the society by assuming their responsibility for the impact that company’s activities have over the community, customers, employees, shareholders and environment. This commitment goes beyond the statutory obligations to observe the legislation and represents some voluntary actions for the improvement of living standards of the employees and their families, as well as of the community and society as a whole.
