EUBAM supports anti-corruption summer school

Vadul lui Voda, Moldova, July 26, 2010 - An International "Youth against Corruption" summer camp kicked off today. 26 Moldovan and Ukrainian students are participating in the event hosted by the Centre for Combating Economic Crime and Corruption, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM). EUBAM is funding the event.

"Corruption has no borders, and hence the fight against corruption should not have borders. Only by joint efforts we will achieve results" said Vlad Filat, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova at the opening event. He highlighted the role of youth and stated that the Moldovan Government takes all necessary measures to ensure transparency in its activities with the objective of developing a democratic, free, active and well informed society.

‘Nobody should accept corruption as the norm and it should be exposed wherever it hides’ said Udo Burkholder, Head of EUBAM. ‘These young people are some of the best and brightest and they will go on and lead the fight against corruption by example’.

In his opening speech Mr Burkholder quoted application essays written by participants: ‘to fight corruption we need full media freedom and structures of accountability. We must use the education system and the media to increase public awareness, raise consciousness and increase feelings of responsibility’ he said.

The summer school aims to prevent corruption by including youth in public anti-corruption initiatives as well as encouraging a zero-tolerance attitude to the issue.

A team of 14 Moldovan and 12 Ukrainian students was selected for the school based on applications and essays titled “How I would fight corruption if I were president”. The school takes place from 25 July to 01 August 2010.

The students, aged 19 to 26 years, were involved in lectures on corruption and its prevention, questions and answers sessions, role plays, a trip to a EUBAM field office on the Moldovan-Ukrainian border and to CCECC Headquarters. A final presentation by students titled “Life without corruption at my university” rounded off the event.

The Anti-corruption school is but one initiative supported by EUBAM that aims to support the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in their efforts to prevent and counter corruption. The Mission, with it’s partners, is involved in facilitating a ‘best border crossing point’ pilot project which aims to create two ‘islands of integrity’ along the Moldovan – Ukrainian border, as well as providing support to regional anti-corruption plans and relevant training and advice.
