Chisinau, November 2, 2005 - A batch of new 80 auto-vehicles have been donated today to the Border Guard Service (BGS) of the Republic of Moldova within the Enhancing Border Control Management Programme, funded by the European Union and co-funded and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in Moldova.
This donation is a support from the European Union and UNDP Moldova provided to the BGS in order to enhance the surveillance capacity, strengthen border management, and increase border security, especially in "green areas". In the context of already launched reforms, this donation represents one more important step towards border modernization according European and international standards.
Moreover, almost 70 sets of modern equipment with the total value of over MDL 32,203 million are being supplied to Moldovan border guards, 3 million MDL from this amount are projected for specialized equipment used to undertake passenger control at the border five times faster.
European Union representative, Mr. Bernhard Bogensperger, Project Manager in the Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, present at the event, stated "in order to achieve the provisions of the EU-Moldova Action Plan, the European Union offers support to Moldova in developing an efficient and comprehensive state border management system in line with EU standards. Apart from equipment and infrastructure works, the Enhancing Border Control Management Programme, financed by the European Union, and co-financed and implemented by UNDP Moldova, has offered support in transforming the Border Guards Service into a law-enforcement agency as well as in developing necessary amendments to the national legislation."
Mr. Bruno Pouezat, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova, underlined: "United Nations Development Program is happy to assist the European Union implement its projects with the Government of Moldova to consolidate and extend national capacities and meet EU standards and regulations".
Border Guard Services representatives highly appreciated EU and UNDP technical assistance within Enhancing Border Control Management Programme. Mr. Igor Colenov, Border Guard General Director said in his statement that European integration of the Republic of Moldova provides for substantive modifications in state border control management and security. Due to direct activities of EU and UNDP Moldova, Border Guard Service continued its actions dedicated to achieving these objectives. "We are just in the beginning of the way and the continuation of the EU and UNDP assistance is very important for us", said Mr. Colenov.
Moldovan Border Guards have been involved in various practical training programs, study tours to Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Hungary and Romania, as well as to various technical trainings on use and maintenance of new and modern equipment, purchased with EU and UNDP assistance.
The European Union and United Nations Development Programme in Moldova launched the Enhancing Border Control Management Programme early this year. Through the equipment donation and technical assistance, the Programme contributes to a substantial reduction of illegal migration and drug trafficking from and through Moldova towards the EU Member States. The Programme also ensures governmental structures participating in border control service to E.U. standards.
